Why I Don’t Wear Wired Bras.

Why? Well pregnancy happened. Boobs grew to a ridiculous size and of course all I wanted was comfort. But then, I started to look into the dangers of wired bras and why they are not recommended during pregnancy.

I ended up doing some more reading and research about this topic. Most of the stuff I found that was opposing bras / underwire, mostly mentioned a link to breast cancer. I had heard about that many times before but I never really thought anything of it because it just wasn’t anything that really bothered me. I’ve always been a tiny cup-size (before pregnancy) and finding uncomfort in bras just wasn’t really a thing for me.

Some other studies don’t go as far as saying it’ll cause cancer but instead claim that wired bras can cause irritation to the underlying tissue (the rib and muscles) which can lead to inflammation. That made more sense to me (compared to the cancer link). Also, I think it has a lot to do with the fit of the bra. A lot of us women wear an incorrect size which can cause a lot of discomfort and aches.

Anyway, I got used to wearing non-wired bras because of pregnancy and then breastfeeding. At first it was really odd to be honest. I had to get used to the feeling of not being fully supported or lifted. But is a lift really that important? Yes, the underwire makes your boobies look better in outfits but is that more important that treating your body well? Well, for me it wasn’t. I’m still breastfeeding so I’m still mostly in nursing bras (which have no underwire) but I’m definitely continuing to wear non-wired bras (and sports bras) afterwards too.

What’s interesting is that there’s lots of research that proves wearing bras actually makes boobs sag more, who would’ve thought?!

I mean to be honest, if I was brave (and hippy) enough I’d just go fully bra-less instead.

But the way this overly sexualised society is set up… Oh and gravity. Modesty, too.🤷🏾‍♀️

What’s your opinion on wired bras or bras in general? If you’re a mum, what’s your bra journey been like? Comment below, I’d love to hear. Amina xx

  1. Ive been in limbo about it, mainly for similar reasons as mentioned in the above. I definitely agree that comfort has become extremely important with kids around, I dislike feeling suffocated and strapped up. Interesting post nonetheless 🙂

  2. I really enjoyed this post hun, personally because of pregnancy, breastfeeding and lastly my small boobs growing up pre baby I started wearing padded bras (like extra padded – almost like push up sort of…lol now not so extra padded given that I was blessed with larger boobs after having a baby) That’s the only type I’ve been using ever since but only when I’m out other than that I never wear bras at home.
Talk about sharing too much information
